Creating new pathways to rewarding careers in the aerospace industry
Middlesex Aerospace is working in partnership with Basingstoke College of Technology (BCoT) to create new pathways for motivated students wishing to embark on a rewarding career in the aerospace industry.
Christian Clifford-Jones, head of engineering at BCoT, said of the partnership:
“Middlesex Aerospace is a fantastic supporter of apprenticeships in the community. They work hand-in-hand with us at BCoT to provide an outstanding apprenticeship framework for both the technical certificate and NVQ programmes. Recently, engineering and manufacturing companies have struggled to recruit qualified, skilled engineers because of the skills shortage. This sponsorship recognises the need to train and develop the next generation of engineers.”
We are totally committed to investing in the future development of aerospace engineering and our strong relations with the education sector has resulted in us being able to provide an outstanding apprenticeship scheme in both the technical certificate and NVQ programme.
At the end of the training, the apprentices will be fully qualified engineers and then have the opportunity to seek employment in the sector or develop their skills further to gain qualifications to HNC, HND, and Degree level.
Interested in a career in aerospace engineering?
The sponsorship scheme is aimed at entry level students who wish to pursue a career in engineering and is a move away from the traditional post-graduate selection process that many companies adopt.
If you are interested to become a Middlesex Aerospace apprentice, in the first instance you need to contact BCoT to enrol in a full time engineering course.
Should you choose to follow this path, and you are successful during your first year at college, then you may be invited by Middlesex Aerospace to join our apprenticeship scheme.
Once you have a place on the apprenticeship scheme, we will sponsor you through college for a further 3 years on a day release basis whilst you gain valuable on-site training and experience within the company.
Entry Requirements
We prefer any applicant to have studied engineering full time for one year and then, if selected as a possible candidate, we would ask for the person to join us for one week work experience.
Following a further interview, if successful, we would then offer the candidate a three year apprenticeship within the company and during this time he or she would attend college on a day release basis to obtain further qualifications.
What qualifications will you be awarded at the end of your Apprenticeship?
On your Apprenticeship, you will be working towards a number of qualifications that combine both work-place based tasks and theory knowledge.
These could be NVQ Certificates or NVQ Diplomas, a BTEC or a City & Guilds, for example. When you complete, as well as these individual qualifications, you will receive an overall Apprenticeship Certificate too.
Alongside this you will be working towards a Technical Certificate at the same level, this will be carried out at college along with the relevant Functional Skills in maths, English and in some cases ICT.
Apprenticeships come in three Levels:
- Level 2 or Intermediate Apprenticeship
- Level 3 or Advanced Apprenticeship
- Level 4+ or Higher Apprenticeship
Some Apprenticeships will require you to start at Level 2, regardless of your previous qualifications; these tend to be skilled trades where you need to learn the basic skills before you can progress. Other Apprenticeships will allow you to go straight in at a higher level, providing you have appropriate qualifications.
Level 1 Functional Skills are required for a Level 2 Apprenticeship
Level 2 Functional Skills are required for a Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship
Functional Skills will not be required for most Higher Apprenticeships as you would have achieved these prior to enrolling. These qualifications are nationally recognised and your programme can be transferred to an alternative employer if at any point necessary.
